Richard P. Coon Memorial STEM Scholarship

The Richard P. Coon Memorial STEM Scholarship was established in 2016 by Mr. Coon’s three children in loving memory of their father and in honor of his dedication to education and his love for Highland County, VA.

Description

The Richard P. Coon Memorial STEM Scholarship is to be awarded to graduating seniors of Highland High School (VA) who have demonstrated academic merit and financial need, and who intend to pursue a STEM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) academic major at a two-year or four-year college or university.

Eligibility

  • An eligible student must be a senior at Highland High School.
  • An eligible student must demonstrate financial need.
  • An eligible student must demonstrate academic merit.
  • An eligible student must have plans to pursue a STEM-related major.
  • An eligible student must be a candidate for high school graduation at the end of the current academic year and plan to enroll at an accredited two-year or four-year college or university in the continental United States the following academic year.

Selection Criteria Used by the Evaluation Committee

  • Academic Merit
  • Financial Need
  • The candidate will be selected by the Highland County High School scholarship evaluation committee for recommendation to the Community Foundation, in accordance with the Community Foundation’s Conflict of Interest Policy.

2024 Award Amount

$1,000 (renewable for one additional year)
