Amount Requested: $4,390 for Girls Embracing Technology: Build a Custom Computer System in One Week To Keep

Mission: The mission of the BRCC Educational Foundation is to build community relationships and secure resources to strengthen the programs and services of Blue Ridge Community College.  The Foundation funds student scholarships, awards instructional and strategic initiative grants, purchases equipment, and more, in support of Blue Ridge Community College.

Constituents Served: Students in credit programs at Blue Ridge Community College must have a high school diploma/equivalent, or be 18 years of age or older, and be able to benefit from a program of study at BRCC.

In addition, the College offers a number of academic programs that impact younger populations, including dual-enrollment and concurrent enrollment.  BRCC also offers non-credit workforce and special interest programs to a wide variety of lifelong learners, including the popular Learning Can Be Fun summer youth program.  In fiscal year 2014-15, Blue Ridge Community College served 10,358 people in credit and non-credit programs.

Program Overview: During the summer of 2016, Assistant Professor of Electronics Technology Mark Fitzgerald plans to teach 10-12 rising middle school girls how to construct a computer system from parts and then load an operating system.  During the week-long course, the students will also learn about computer number systems, basic logic functions, parts of a computer system, storage devices, and potential careers related to computing.  This summer camp will be free to participants, thereby encouraging a wide range of participation.

The Girls Embracing Technology camp is an effort to encourage interest and enthusiasm for science and technology.  As of 2014, women in the United States hold less than 25% of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) jobs.  Computing jobs are among the fastest growing and the highest paying, yet few women are benefiting from these occupations.  This trend increases social inequalities and barriers to girls’ future life opportunities.

The camp will take place in summer 2016 (specific dates yet to be determined).

The BRCC Educational Foundation actively seeks support for a variety of important priorities at Blue Ridge Community College.  These include supporting Workforce and Economic Development efforts through funding for development of new career and technical programs and curricula, as well as the purchase of equipment.  Also included are efforts to increase Access and Student Support through student scholarships, the Great Expectations program for foster youth, incentives for GED recipients, and BRCC Career Coaches in local high schools.
