Amount Requested: $7,000 for Boys & Girls Club Summer Camp Scholarship Fund for Low-Income Youth

Mission: The mission of the Boy & Girls Club of Waynesboro, Staunton & Augusta County is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

We offer daily access through our after school and summer camp programs to a broad range of opportunities in five core program areas (Character and Leadership Development; Education and Career Development; Health and Life Skills; The Arts; and Sports, Fitness and Recreation) and several other specialized initiatives. All of our programs are designed to drive positive outcomes for youth and reinforce necessary skills. Today, more than 300 young people take advantage of the programs, activities and services provided by our organization.

Constituents Served: All area youth in grades K-12 are eligible for our services.  We strive to make our program accessible to kids from all backgrounds, with a particular focus on girls and boys whom other agencies have had difficulty reaching.  Last year, the Boys & Girls club served a total of 418 youth in Waynesboro, Staunton & Augusta County.

Program Overview: During the summer, Boys & Girls Club offers day-long programming and essential services to area youth through our 6-week long Summer Camp.  Enriching programs, fun trips to the local pool, and exciting experiences with community partners like Project Grows are part of our diverse roster of summertime activities.  As always, our programs strive to develop a foundation of healthy lifestyles, civic engagement, community leadership, and provides a summer academic bridge for the area youth who need us most.  The Boys & Girls Club is seeking support for a scholarship fund that will allow low-income area youth to attend our 2016 Summer Camp at a reduced rate.  The cost of providing six weeks of summer camp is roughly $500 child.  This cost covers programming and outings, Monday through Friday, and includes breakfast, lunch, snacks, etc., but is difficult for many of the families we serve to afford.  A grant of $7,000 would subsidize half of the cost of tuition ($250 per child) for 28 area low-income youth to attend Summer Camp.

The Boys & Girls Club seeks year-round financial support from the community for our scholarship fund. During the school year, we provide affordable access to after school care for the youth in our area who need us most.  Low-income club members can apply for scholarship funds that reduce membership fees to $20 per week.  Monday through Friday, from 2pm to 7pm, our after school program offers snack and dinner, homework help and access to tutors, and a variety of engaging and fun learning opportunities, with a strong focus on Education and Career Development to help our youth reach their full potential.

Current Operating Budget: $500,000
