Mission: Advancing Christ Through Sports’ (ACTSports) mission is to develop the whole person while caring for a diverse community through an efficient innovative sports organization.
Community Need: ACTSports is committed to offering unique opportunities to benefit the children and youth in the area. They realize that there are children and youth that have interests in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) that would benefit from a STEM program. Access to STEM-based experiences is not available to all who would have these interests. By offering such a program, ACTSports would have the opportunity to reach and impact more children and youth and help them to excel and be competitive in these areas.
Primary Activities: ACTSports believes in providing high-quality sports and educational opportunities for youth in the area to impact them for life. They currently offer eight recreational sports and three travel sports which focus on athletics and skill development. They also speak into the hearts of their players through Team-Time topics. These topics focus on character and spiritual development.
To further impact all athletes beyond the arena of sports, ACTSports established the Success Obtained by Accepting Responsibility (SOAR) program. This is the educational division of ACTSports. Through SOAR, they offer homework assistance and educational workshops that focus on Health & Nutrition and Leadership & Communication. Their goal is for participants to accept responsibility in these areas, which will help to make them more successful in life.
Constituents Served: ACTSports is available to youth throughout Augusta County and the surrounding cities of Staunton, Waynesboro, and others. Participation ranges among different sports for boys and girls between the ages of 6 to 18. In the 2017, ACTSports served 660 participants (491 in recreational sports and 169 in travel sports). All athletes receive a one-year membership into SOAR, and have access to 100% of the opportunities offered for no additional fee.
Program Details: Their goal is to implement an ongoing STEM program for K-12 children and youth. It will be a 100% community-based program, facilitated by professionals who will volunteer their time and expertise for the program’s success. Students will be involved in hands-on projects and experiments and participate in in-house, local, regional, state, and national STEM conferences and competitions. It is also their desire to host STEM annual conferences and competitions. This will operate as one of their SOAR programs. It is their belief that the more kids they impact, the more families they impact.
The success of this program is based on continued support from volunteers and the financial support to purchase the items needed to launch the STEM program. By stimulating growth in the STEM program increases the participation in the SOAR program.
