Mission: As an integral part of the vision of Old Dominion Performance Arts Studio (ODPAS) – they believe in making their services as accessible as possible, regardless of race, gender, financial situations, etc. It is their purpose to reach out into the community to share the arts that they offer and enrich the lives of others while offering students opportunities to develop their talents, skills, and build on their community awareness. They have always had an extensive financial assistance/scholarship program and have seen how contributions to this program have changed lives and made dreams come true.
Community Need: There are several high quality, professional dance and martial arts training studios in the area. They offer competitive training for the lowest price. There are also cheaper recreational programs that offer very basic skills, but none that offer the same training and opportunities. Their studio offers in-depth, year-round classes in multiple disciplines, as well as many performance opportunities.
Constituents Served: The studio is committed to making every effort to offer their programs to as many students as possible, regardless of background or financial situation. Their history is full of recognized positive results and student acceptance and scholarship receipt into many highly recognized programs. Several of these successful ODPAS students came to them needing the support (financial and nurturing), to pursue their training. They allow anyone who wishes to take their classes to do so; but even with their lower prices, there are many families that cannot afford the fees. They rely on fundraising to pay for these scholarships.
Primary Activities: Classes are currently offered year round in the Martial Arts and Dance Divisions for children ages two years through adults. They offer progressive programming in both their divisions so that students are offered classes in a variety of levels to meet their abilities. In addition to this primary programming, they offer additional programs throughout the year (like Yoga, Zumba, etc.) that also enrich training opportunities and outreach into the community. They also use their performance platform to help other non-profit groups by demonstrating at their events. All students are encouraged to participate in these events.
As part of their commitment to future generations, and to ensure quality training, their diverse faculty come from backgrounds with professional training experience. In addition to classroom experience, many students actively participate in their teaching assistant program to gain teaching experience working under their staff on various projects. Their current student population ranges in age from 2 to 76 years old. Those students come from Waynesboro, Staunton, Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, Augusta County, Albemarle County, Nelson County, and Rockingham County.
