Mission: WNRN’s mission is to strengthen communities in central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley through music, art and education.
Community Need: WNRN staff looks for nonprofits who are reliant on volunteer engagement but have limited means to recruit. They actively encourage their listeners to give back to the community by airing messages with direct appeals for volunteers. All nonprofit organizations have volunteer boards, run programs that use volunteers, and need volunteers to run fundraising events for their operations. Therefore, WNRN aims to share a wide range of ways to make a difference for every schedule and interest for potential volunteers. WNRN interviews local citizens who are involved with area nonprofits in order to spotlight their community engagement. Interested listeners can learn more about each organization by visiting their website for more information, along with podcasted audio of the on-air profile.
Primary Activities: WNRN broadcasts on ten frequencies throughout Central Virginia. Their signals reach Charlottesville, Richmond, Lynchburg, Staunton, and Waynesboro, Harrisonburg and Lexington as well as the 21 counties near these cities. Hear Together is their award-winning public service program that highlights nonprofits working to make a difference in the communities. The minute and a half segments run hourly. By identifying ways to get involved, WNRN hopes to motivate listeners to volunteer to help improve the lives of others in the area. Hear Together public service announcements serve to increase the effectiveness of nonprofit organizations in the area. The profiled volunteers’ contribution spotlights the many ways listeners can make a difference by engaging in their community. The Hear Together staff is increasing their efforts to get new profiles on the air and gather feedback from the non-profits.
Constituents Served: WNRN radio broadcasts more than 8,000 public service announcements each year to their 80,000 listeners of all ages in 21 counties in Central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley, plus the cities of Richmond, Lynchburg, Charlottesville, Staunton, Waynesboro, and Harrisonburg. Hear Together gives over $300,000 in free airtime to area nonprofit organizations. These organizations, in turn, can use the Hear Together profile on their website to educate and further spread their mission.
Program Details: Running different underwriting and nonprofit messages in different markets required equipment upgrades and a new software program. This cutting edge segmentation gives them a way to super serve each area while keeping the appealing music programming the same. WNRN is committed to bring the best quality programming to its listeners. This includes upgrades to their broadcast chain. WNRN just completed an increase in power to their Richmond signals. They hope to upgrade their Harrisonburg facility, and currently have construction permit for their Charlottesville broadcast site.
