Waynesboro First Aid Crew

Mission: The mission of the Waynesboro First Aid Crew (WFAC) is to provide the best pre-hospital emergency care and rescue services to the citizens of Waynesboro and surrounding areas.

Community Need: The WFAC is a rescue agency in the city of Waynesboro and surrounding areas of Augusta County.  Their 24 hours a day, 7 days a week staff of career and volunteer personnel responds primarily to emergency 911 calls for a wide variety of issues including illness, injuries, and other calls for emergency service.

Every year, more than 250,000 people experience a STEMI, which is a type of heart attack caused by a complete blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment.  To prevent death, it is critical to restore blood flow as quickly as possible either by surgically opening the blood vessel or by administering clot busting medication.

EMS are vital to the success of Mission Lifeline.  EMS agencies provide access to 12-lead machines (devices that help determine if a heart attack has occurred) and follow protocols provided by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology guidelines.  The correct tools and training allow EMS providers to rapidly identify the STEMI, promptly notify the medical center, and trigger an early response from awaiting hospital personnel.

Constituents Served: The WFAC serves a multitude of people from low to high income ranging in age from newborn to those in their upper 90’s and above. During 2017, they served a population of around 30,000 and responded to 4,620 calls for service.

Primary Activities: The Primary Activities undertaken by the WFAC on a daily basis are to provide pre-hospital emergency care to the citizens of Waynesboro and the surrounding area who are sick or injured or otherwise in need of emergency medical services.

In 2017, the WFAC received the Mission Lifeline Gold Plus Award for Emergency Medical Services (EMS).  Of the 21,283 EMS agencies nationwide, only 611 agencies in the U.S. attained Mission Lifeline recognition.  Of those 611 agencies, only 25 of those were agencies in Virginia, and only 9 attained Gold Plus status.

They have been cutting expenses and placed a spending freeze on non-essential items. They are also currently increasing their fundraising efforts over what has been in past years in order to help stabilize their current financial situation (see details on unexpected change below).
