2019 Nonprofit Workshops-Highland County

The Community Foundation, in partnership with the Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNE), is pleased to offer the following 2019 workshops at The Highland Center in Monterey, VA:

Topic:  Nonprofit Board Leadership

Location:  The Highland Center (Monterey)

In a highly-functioning organization, the Chair of the Board of Directors leads the Board in the oversight, thinking, and support that is critical to good governance. With the Executive Director, the Chair prioritizes what is most critical for the Board to address and sets the tone for the organization’s work.  In this workshop, participants will learn valuable tips on how to build leadership skills and make the Chair’s tenure as successful as possible.

Workshop participants will learn:

  • Nonprofit Board Chair responsibilities
  • Responsibilities of the Board of Directors
  • Executive Director/Chair partnership
  • Building consensus
  • Chair succession planning

Who Should Attend: Current and prospective Board Chairs, Executive Directors, and others interested in the effective leadership of nonprofit organizations.

Fee: $35 for participants affiliated with a CNE member organization; $55 for all other participants.

TrainerCindy Colson, CNE Director of Strategic Initiatives

Cindy brings over 18 years of leadership experience in the nonprofit sector. She has worked on building strong collaborations with more than 65 nonprofits to develop programs and initiatives to address community needs.

Topic: Grant Writing Nuts and Bolts

Location:  The Highland Center (Monterey)

Preparing and submitting a successful grant proposal can be an intimidating process for both new and also experienced grant writers. While there is no one magic formula to use when writing grants, there are many best practices to lean on that will heighten your chances for success. Join independent grant writer and CNE consultant member, Laurie Rogers, to learn practical and proven techniques to strengthen your grant writing power and secure funds for your organization.

Participants will learn:

  • Steps to ensure your agency is grant-ready
  • Tips and resources for grant research
  • Helpful talking points to use with funders prior to proposal submission
  • Tools to use for building each component of the proposal

Who Should Attend: All nonprofit professionals and volunteers who are engaged in fundraising activities.

TrainerLaurie Jarrett Rogers

Laurie Rogers has worked as an independent fundraising consultant for the past 19 years, working with non-profits on all aspects of fundraising. Laurie has taught on a variety of fund raising topics (grant writing, annual fund, fund raising 101, endowments, corporate support, et al) at the UVA School for Continuing and Professional Studies and the Institute of Government for 17 years, and she has taught in the counterpart divisions at VCU for 19 years.
