Jane Simmons was a humble woman with a big heart, a love for her community, and an eye on the future. She and her husband Dal, who passed away in 1990, had a philanthropic spirit that supported many local organizations, but more importantly, touched hundreds of lives in our community. Jane chose to give anonymously during her lifetime, seeking only the private gratification of serving others. We lost Jane in November 2005, but Jane and Dal’s giving spirit will live on forever, helping to address needs in our community in ways we can only imagine now. Jane was deliberate and thoughtful in seeking ways to give back to the community that she and Dal loved so dearly. “Jane was excited when she learned of the Community Foundation, and quickly grasped that she could effectively use it as her partner to permanently benefit the needs of the community she cared so much about,” stated Carl G. Lind, CFP and Principal with Diveley Lind & Associates, LLC of Fort Defiance who served as Simmons’ financial advisor. Jane created three Funds with the Foundation, including the L. Dal and Jane Simmons Unrestricted Fund. Her background was modest and she didn’t provide for these funds all at once – she built them over the course of many years of dedicated support. She also put the Community Foundation in her estate plan to ensure a stronger capacity for the Community Foundation to sustain long-term service to others and community enrichment. Over the years Jane’s generosity has provided multiple grants to non-profit organizations whose services and programs make a difference in our community.
