Community Foundation Announces 2015 Smyth Education Awards

The Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge presented the 18th annual Smyth Education Awards at the opening meeting of the Nelson County Public Schools on Tuesday, August 4th.  The Smyth Education Awards recognize and reward outstanding staff performance in the public schools of Nelson County. During the ceremony, in which Mary Beth Smyth participated, the Foundation recognized ten recipients for their exemplary efforts and presented each with a plaque and an individual cash award of $1,000.

2015 Smyth Education Award Recipients:

Carey Banton was recognized for her outstanding work as a fourth grade teacher at Tye River Elementary School.

Colleen Cook was recognized for her superior performance as a first year teacher and for her exemplary dedication to the care of her pre-K special education students at Rockfish River Elementary School.

Gordon Dalton was recognized for his exemplary and successful work with students at all levels as a speech therapist at Rockfish River Elementary School.

Crystal Grubbs was recognized for her outstanding work as a second grade teacher at Tye River Elementary School.

Vonnie Maurhoff was recognized for her many years of exemplary and dedicated teaching of kindergartners at Tye River Elementary School.

Julie Morris was recognized for her extraordinary work as an instructional assistant in the “self contained” special education classroom at Rockfish River Elementary School.

Matthew Oliver was recognized for his outstanding work as a custodian at Tye River Elementary School.

Beth Price was recognized for her exemplary work as an eighth grade Math teacher at Nelson County Middle School.

Demetrius “Petey” Vaughan was recognized for his outstanding work as an instructional assistant in the Special Education classroom at Nelson County High School.

Kevin Walker was recognized for his outstanding work as a Health and Physical Education teacher at Nelson County High School.
