Community Foundation’s Highland County YPC Announces $10,000 Available to Support Local Programs
Jan 6, 2020

The Highland County Youth Philanthropy Council (HC YPC), an initiative of the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge in partnership with The Highland Center, is pleased to announce the availability of $10,000 in competitive grant funding for organizations addressing the community needs of Highland County.

The Community Foundation established its first YPC in 2008.  Given the unique characteristics of the Highland County community, the Community Foundation created the HC YPC in 2015 in an effort to also provide opportunities for local youth in the area to gain leadership, consensus building, philanthropic, and decision-making skills, while supporting their community.

They have so far allocated a total of $45,000 to organizations supporting their community. This coming year they will present grants totaling $10,000 to nonprofit organizations that either serve Highland County or are planning on expanding services into Highland County.

For their 2020 grants, the HC YPC is seeking to support organizations and/or programs that address the following areas:

  • Access to healthy foods;
  • Transportation for all residents of highland county;
  • Access to mental health services;
  • Assistance for victims of domestic violence;
  • Assistance for victims of substance abuse:
  • Assistance for home heating needs:
  • Childcare located within Highland County;
  • Access to Health Services.

Members of the YPC consist of six students (9th-12th grade) from Highland County. They will review each application and evaluate it based on its effectiveness at addressing the priorities listed above. Their ultimate goal is to support local nonprofits in their work, fill current gaps in community resources, and spur innovative approaches to solving longstanding community problems.

Applications for projects of all sizes are encouraged, but the minimum award will be $500 and maximum award will be $5,000.  The deadline is Friday, February 21st at 5:00 p.m. EST.  A link to the online grant application is available at
