There are many ways in which our donors can help the residents of our community, and the development of our Scholarship to Change Lives is an inspiring example. Thanks to the generosity and thoughtfulness of several donors, we designed this new scholarship program to help individuals of all ages and backgrounds pursue nontraditional educational opportunities that have the potential to truly change their lives.
15-year old Sophia Schwaner of Staunton, an aspiring music composer, had been selected to participate in the Boston Conservatory at Berklee High School Composition Intensive during the summer of 2019. The program was, unfortunately, cost-prohibitive for her and her family. Through the Scholarship to Change Lives, and the support of friends from the community, Sophia was able to participate and hone her craft. Sophia noted:
This life-changing opportunity will truly help me find my potential in my art form. It will allow me to keep growing and pushing myself as an artist, while surrounded by an encouraging and supportive team of professionals in the field.
With assistance from the Scholarship to Change Lives we also helped Cheryl Fortune pursue her dream of a college degree while also caring for her family, something that is not always feasible for working mothers.
Candidates for the Scholarship to Change Lives are to be nominated by a friend, mentor, or other community member. We accept and respond to nominations year-round.
If you are interested in supporting the Scholarship to Changes Lives, please consider making a contribution. We also invite you to share your ideas, big and small, on ways you would like to make a difference. Our Community Foundation connects people who care with causes that matter, and we would love to hear from you.
