Variety – the Children’s Charity of the National Capital Region (Variety DC)

Why We Exist

The mission of Variety – the Children’s Charity of the National Capital Region (Variety DC) is to improve the quality of life for children with mobility challenges and their families by providing funding for services, equipment and/or recreational experiences for the children. Variety – the Children’s Charity of the National Capital Region will focus on children in need in DC, MD, and VA.

What We Do

Children have been referred to Variety DC by hospital administrators, pediatricians and therapists. We have developed a network of developmental specialists, as well as bicycle and van manufacturers, throughout the region. Some of these children try out the bicycles during physical therapy appointments, and their doctors and physical therapists tell us that being able to use these devices every day makes a big difference in the child’s progress. The adaptive vans with chair lifts are necessary as children age and grow, and parents are no longer able to lift their child. We hope to begin providing support for services such as therapeutic riding and swimming.

Who We Serve

The primary audience is families with a child who has mobility disabilities in MD, DC or VA who are in need of adaptive bicycles or vans, or services such as therapeutic riding.
Why Community Members Support Our Work
Adaptive equipment is life-changing for every child and family but often is not covered by insurance. Adaptive bicycles provide an immense improvement in the physical and emotional well-being of the children who are able to strengthen their bodies through exercise, increase their mobility, and improve their outlook. The families and care-givers of these children are given the ability to go for walks, move around their homes and buildings more easily, and rest themselves from the physical strains of mobility challenges. Vans with chairlifts are requested and Variety DC provides partial support when possible. We hope to begin funding other beneficial services for these children such as therapeutic riding camps and swimming lessons. Variety DC bridges the gap between physical therapy offices and home by raising funds to serve as the critical link between the medical community, the manufacturers, and the families.
