Sustaining Local Journalism

The Recorder, established in 1877, is the newspaper of record serving scenic Bath, Highland, and Alleghany counties in Virginia. In addition to being honored with the state’s highest award for journalistic integrity and community service, The Recorder has been selected by Press Forward in 2024 to receive its Closing Local Coverage Gaps grant.

The Community Foundation proudly serves as the fiscal sponsor of The Recorder and, specifically, their continued work to:

  • Produce and deliver original, local news and information to underserved audiences,
  • Place community listening and audience research at the center of its work,
  • Maintain strong networks and partnerships with members of its community,
  • Strengthen its editorial impact, operational resilience, and financial health, and
  • Retain and attract newsroom leaders and reporters who reflect the community served by The Recorder and have a clear vision for how to effectively serve the local news needs of the community.
